Roman 5th century silver-gilt mount. A circular silver-gilt mount with chip-carved decoration on the front face and an iron backplate. The decoration is divided into eight segments, with an eight-pointed star at the centre and an outward-facing C-scroll in each segment. The mount retains three silver rivets for attachment. Discovered in the early 1990's, the mount was recorded with the British Museum and a copy of the correspondence can be found in the lot images. They suggest that the closest parallels for the decoration are on the sword fittings from the Coleraine hoard (c. AD420) and the early 5th century Frankish grave from Vermand, Belgium. 35mm diameter x 6mm, 15.8g
